Appraisal skills for managers

Queens Suite 9
9:00AM - 5:00PM, 20 Jan 2025

This class is for anyone currently in, or moving into a role where they will be responsible for carrying out staff appraisals and reviews. Annual appraisals, completed effectively, can be an opportunity to re‑energise, motivate and focus staff on their key objectives. Completed badly, they can demotivate staff and undermine the relationship with their manager and the organisation. The class will cover performance management, setting SMART objectives, preparing and carrying out the appraisal meeting, feedback skills and creating personal development plans.

Learning outcomes:

  • Explain the purpose of the appraisal process
  • Produce a preparation checklist for appraisals
  • Explain the difference between performance management and personal development
  • Describe an effective format for appraisal interviews
  • Develop a personal action plan to implement the learning
